The 2008 Senate race is starting to heat up. A Rasmussen Reports poll found Al Franken leading Norm Coleman in the general election.
Against Franken, Coleman earns support from 82% of conservative voters while Franken draws support from 88% of liberal voters. Over half (58%) of moderate voters choose Franken, while 37% choose Coleman.
Coleman is viewed favorably by 55% of Minnesota voters and unfavorably by 42%. Fifty-percent (50%) of voters view Franken favorably, while 42% view him unfavorably. Ciresi is viewed favorably by 46% of voters, and unfavorably by 42%.
Norm Coleman, Al Franken and Mike Ciresi all have exactly the same negatives. This undermines one of the strongest arguments against Franken's candidacy. Also despite being constantly branded as a ultraliberal he holds a wide lead among moderates. I think it's safe to say Norm has to be very worried about his job right now.
Another interesting development that could make him even more uneasy is a possible primary challenge from former Senator Rod Grams. All I can say is this. Run Rod Run! |

The UAW Minnesota State CAP Council is now throwing their support behind Ashwin Madia. A few weeks ago the Teamsters Local 120 also endorsed him. His main opponent, Terri Bonoff, has received the endorsement of AFSCME Council 5 which admittedly is probably the most important union endorsement.
When AFSCME went for Bonoff it seemed likely that the unions would go her way. However they seem to be trending towards Madia now. It will be interesting to see how the endorsements of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) shake out. |

| Iraq Vet and former Watertown Mayor Steve Sarvi is now officially running for congress. Sarvi seems like a good canidate to take on John Kline in the 2nd Congressional District and someone needs to. Kline has kept a low profile but consistently votes to the right of his district. He is as radical as Michelle Bachman but manages to keep a low enough profile that no one notices. On everything from SCHIP to Iraq he votes lockstep with the most unpopular president in history.
Hopefully Sarvi will learn a lesson or two from Tim Walz and his grassroots campaign in 2006 and will be able to hold Kline accountable. |

| Welcome to Minnesota Progress. This will not be a long and detailed post on the mission of this site. Just a quick intro. Minnesota Progress will be a progressive community, generally aligned with the Democratic Party working to change it from the inside. But we will not just be about elections we will also focus on movement building, policy, the legislative process and more. Our goal is a better world and we will work both in and outside the political system to achieve progress for Minnesota. |
